Simple Picot coaster crochet pattern

SKILL LEVEL: Easy

MEASUREMENTS: Approx. ( 11.5 cm) diameter

MATERIALS:

  • Bernat Handicrafter 100% cotton yarn (solid), 1.75 oz/ 50 g; 80 yds/ 73 m

             Off white or any colour you like        1 skein makes about 5 coasters

  • Size 4.0mm (U.S. G/6) crochet hook

  • Yarn needle and scissors

ABBREVIATIONS:

Approxi = approximately 

Beg. = beginning

Ch.(s) = chain(s)

St.(s) = stitch

Sl.st. = slip stitch

Rep. = repeat

R(#) = round (number of the round)

Sc. = single crochet stitch

Dc. = double crochet stitch

P.Sc. = picot single crochet stitch

Yoh. = yarn over hook

Cont. = continue

WS. = wrong side

RS. = right side

CROCHET STITCHES:

MAGIC CIRCLE/RING:

  • Hold the end of the yarn with your left hand’s thumb and middle finger.

  • Using your right hand, wrap it around your point and middle fingers (away from you) twice, making an X on the palm side and 2 parallel lines on the other side.

  • Insert hook under the first parallel line and pull the second line through, hold tight while taking your fingers out of the ring.

  • Chain 1 to secure the ring and continue with the pattern’s instructions.

SLIP STITCH: (Sl.st.)

Insert hook into indicated st. and yoh and pull through both the indicated stitch and the loop on the hook in one movement.

SINGLE CROCHET STITCH: (Sc.)

Insert hook into indicated st. and draw up a loop (you will have 2 loops on hook) then yoh and pull through both loops on hook.

DOUBLE CROCHET STITCH: (Dc.)

Yoh and insert into indicated st., draw up a loop ( you will have 3 loops on hook) then yoh and pull through first 2 loops ( you will have 2 loops on hook), yoh once more and pull through last 2 loops.

PICOT SINGLE CROCHET STITCH: (P.Sc.)

**worked from the wrong side and you will see it on the right side.

The wrong side is facing you, insert hook into indicated stitch and draw up a loop ( you will have 2 loops on hook) then (yarn over and pull through the first loop only) 3 times to make 3 chains, then yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. 

**Try to push the picot stitch you just made toward the right side while working the next stitch. You will have a granule (P.Sc.) formed on the right side. 

PATTERN NOTES:

  • Try to work with the same tension throughout the coaster to get an even and neat project.

  • 2 Chs. at the Beg. of each round DO NOT count as 1 Dc.

  • Always count your stitches at the end of each round.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Start with a magic ring. (follow magic ring instructions on page#1)
  • R(1): Ch.1, do 16 Dc. into the ring, then, join with a Sl.St. into the first Dc. to close the round……(total 16 Dc.)
  • R(2): Ch.1 and do 2 Dc. into each St. around, join with a Sl.St. into the first Dc (total 32 Dc.)
  • R(3): Ch.1 and do 2 Dc. into the first St. and do 1 Dc. into the next St., then Rep. the pattern of (2 Dc. in one St. and 1 Dc. into the next St.) 15 more times. Then join and close the round with a Sl.St. into the first Dc…..(total 48 Dc.)
  • R(4): Ch.1 and turn your work (WS. facing you), then do 1 Sc. into the first St. and 1 P.Sc. into the second St. Rep. the pattern of (1 Sc. in one St. and 1 P.Sc. into the next St. until you reach the last St. do 1 P.Sc.into it. Then join with a Sl.St. into the first Sc. …….(total 24 Sc. and 24 P.S.c)
  • Fasten off and weave in the ends using your needle and scissors.
